Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your prelimanary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

There are a lot of areas in which I have increased my capacity of knowledge and skill level throughout the transition from my preliminary task to my final product. This can be seen on both the practical recoding of the clips and the editing of the products.

The first thing that you will notice is the use of the tripod and camera. In the preliminary task you could hear a clicking noise in some sections. This was from the tripod not being loosened enough for it to move freely. In my final product you do not hear this at all which makes the project appear better made, more professional and makes the film flow better. This in tern had an effect on the camera work. In the preliminary task it was not smooth and because of the tripod had jolts mid shot such as during the establishing shot or when the girl walk’s into the room and grabs a chair. In the final product all the shots are smooth and has no jolts throughout its duration. The flow of the film has also been improved. In the preliminary task you could see when a character started instead of just seeing her moving as if she had been moving the entire time. I tackled this problem in the final product by either having the character start behind the camera and then walk in or through editing. The footage themselves have improved as well. In the preliminary task some of the footage had unwanted sections. The most notable one being after the girl has walked into the room and begins to walk forward. The actor begins to laugh which I was unfortunately not able to take out. I tackled this by repeating the shoots or through editing by cropping them out, cutting them short or by taking section of the clip out. An example is in the final product when the girl is running from the battle and you hear the main character say “run…RUN!” The three shots that I had to add in both the preliminary and the final product were 'Shot Revers Shot', '180 Degree Rule' and 'Match on Action Shot'. In both I successfully placed them in however, in the preliminary task it is more focused on and more noticeable. There is one problem with my final product however that was out of my control. When the smoke grenade lands in front of the camera it is red but this changes when the three groups charge the two main characters. The smoke grenade changed to green. This was a mistake by the Tactical Warfare Airsoft Shop from my order.

The bigger aspect of the final product that you will see has changed and improve dramatically is the editing of the film. In the preliminary task the only editing that I was capable of doing was putting the clips together (not very well to say the least) and cutting and trimming clips. In the final product there is considerable improvement to these editing skills as well as a lot of new techniques and skills added. The first new addition that you will notice is the text that I have added. This is to give credit to those who help me with the project and present the title of the project. The second addition is the non-diegetic sound that I added in. I used various tracks that matched what was shown on screen but also created the atmosphere of what I wanted such as curiosity, suspension or romance. I also used transition from one scene to another to make the product smoother unlike in the preliminary task where they are just side-by-side. In some scenes there are sections that are cut off. This is where I have had to crop the clip because there were unwanted elements that were caught on camera. The final visual improvement is the use of muzzle flashes on the guns. I used these to make the use of the weaponry look better and more realistic. The diegetic sound that I used such as gun sounds I made sure were precisely placed so that they matched with the reactions of the characters and with the muzzle flashes.

All of these improvements and additions were possible because of the hours of work that I put in from the research and experimentation that I conducted. It also came from the advice that I was given from my friends, family and teachers to make the product appear better and professionally made, help me understand how things work and constantly assessing the work that I had produced. Through the production of the final product I have learned many different skills in camera work, editing and controlling the way things appear on screen that I can use for future projects.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media production?

The audience for my media product would be predominately male teenagers aged between 12 and 18. Their ethnicity would most likely be white because they are the ethnicity of the different characters that I have shown. These male teenagers are going to be students some with a part time job so they can afford to go the see the film. There is a possibility for some female audiences to attend as well because they either are fans of the same genre or are interested in the romantic side of the film. Since my film contains horror, action, adventure, romance and fantasy genres my audience would be rather wide allowing for multiple types of people to be interested in the film. For example some people may like rock music others metal and others techno. This can all be incorporated into the non-diegetic music that I use. Most teenagers like to go out with friends and so because this film appeals to multiple people it is something they can all go and view.

When I first started to look at the conventions of the genres for my film I had in the back of my mind what I was capable of doing. It could not be an 18 rated because I cannot create the gory sections of a horror however I can use harsh language and strong references in my themes. When I began my research into other films such as ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’, ‘Carrie’ and ‘House of A 1000 Corpses’ along with ‘The British Board of Film Classification’ is when I really thought about what my rating should be. Through the films I looked at I noticed what sort of films and representations where shown. I then compared this to what I am capable off and decided that a low rating such as a 15 would be the best suited. However this changed after looking at the BBFC and see how they classify films and their descriptions. This is when I made the classification 12. It was only when I created the audience profiles that I started to get deeper in what type of people are most likely going to see my film.

I think that my target audience will want to see my film because it is a good start for getting into horror films and because there are a lot of aspects that I have involved that will attracted them such as incredible action sequences, attractive female roles, an impressive story line and enough attracting elements to make them want to see and learn more. My audience would also watch my media product because it involves many different genres of film that they like such as action and horror so would like to see whether they can be put together and make an interesting and exciting block buster.

My Audiences Response To The Opening Title Sequance

After I had finished editing my film introduction I showed it to a small group and asked them for feedback both 'what went well' and 'even better if'. Their responses are below.

Billy
Very good, liked the fact the scenes of walking have been removed and the use of props such as the smoke grenade. The flow of the introduction is very well placed and does not confuse the viewer. From the original 7 minute introduction to the new 2 minute none of the story line that has been lost but in fact gained because not too much is given away straight from the start. The style of the text could be changed so that it is bigger and more noticeable.

Amy
The introduction from the beginning was intriguing because you are wondering what is happening and whether the guy is good or bad. There was a good use of a soundtrack which links to the genre well and is easier for us an audience to identify. I also like the different types of editing used such as fades and cuts. I like the use of camera work because it makes the audience feel what the characters are feeling using close ups. I liked the fast paced editing when the enemy factions appeared because it makes the audience feel excited with the use of action. The title was also good because it’s bold and stands out and the colours of the title match with the main character. It could be improved by adjusting the text on screen.

Tracy
I enjoyed watching this introduction. I liked the fact that it left you wondering about the romance between the Green Skull and the girl. I would have liked to have seen more of the two together rather than all the fighting. The muzzle flashes look really good and realistic.

Neale
The introduction gripped me from the very start and the mystery of the story held your attention to watch further. It was a very effective introduction. I did think of an old comedy show involving soldiers, called Dads Army, when the cast and crew were announced, as the techniques were similar. The overall look of the film was very professional.

Matthew
At the very start of the viewing there were many different questions that came to head, I thought this was very gripping and made me want to watch to find out more.  Through the scenes I am able to work out the relationship between the ‘Green Skull’ and the girl, this then creates a massive twist when the ‘enemy factions’ come out from nowhere and surprise them.  The introduction to the actors reminded me of old sitcoms like ‘allo allo’ as they are shown what they are doing and then their name appears. The film looks professional although there are a couple of improvements which could be made in regards to the sound effects of the weapons, however this would require expensive software.

Holly

Good use of sounds effects (i.e gunshot sounds) however the visual effects for the gun shots could be slightly more realistic. Other than that it was an entrapping clip that made you want to watch more to find out what happen. It was greatly improved by removing some of the scenes where the only thing occurring was walking.

'The Hunt For The Green Skull' Final Cut

This is the final version for my film introduction. It has been shorterned to 2 minutes 36 seconds. I got rid of the entire conversation scene and cropped down certain sections in order to get the desired length with out getting rid of some of the story that was shown without giving away to much information.
